Free EPUB Checker
Check an EPUB for the problems that get files rejected by Amazon, Apple Books and Kobo, right in your browser.
How to use the EPUB checker
Drop your .epub file onto the box. The checker opens it in your browser and lists anything stores are likely to reject, with what to fix. Nothing is uploaded, so it’s safe for unpublished books.
What it checks
An EPUB is a ZIP archive with a fixed structure. The EPUB standard requires a few things that stores check first:
- The mimetype file must be the first file in the archive, uncompressed, reading exactly
application/epub+zip. Zipping a folder by hand usually breaks this. - The container and package files (
META-INF/container.xmland the .opf file) must exist and point to each other. - Metadata: a title, a language, a unique identifier and, for EPUB 3, a last-modified date.
- Every file listed in the package must be in the archive, and the reading order must only use listed files.
- A table of contents: a navigation document for EPUB 3, or an NCX file for EPUB 2.
- Pages must be well-formed XHTML, with working internal links and images inside the book.
It also flags things that cause trouble in stores: a missing or small cover, images without alt text, DRM encryption, and files near KDP’s 650 MB limit. Each store then runs its own checks on upload; our guide to publishing a book on Kobo shows where that happens on Kobo Writing Life.
This covers the problems that stop most uploads, but it isn’t a full validation. Apple Books requires books to pass EPUBCheck, the official validator, so run it before you submit there. No EPUB yet? Make one from Word, PDF or Markdown.
EPUB checker examples
“The mimetype file isn’t set up the way stores require”
The book was re-zipped by hand. Export it again from your writing app, or rebuild it with one of the converters, instead of editing the ZIP.
“3 listed files are missing”
The package names images or chapters that were deleted or renamed. Put the files back or remove them from the manifest.
“Some pages have markup errors”
Usually an unclosed tag or a bare & in the text. Readers can show those pages blank, so fix them before uploading.

Is my EPUB uploaded?
No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your computer. Nothing is uploaded to Koobe or anywhere else, so it works for unpublished manuscripts too.
Is this the same as EPUBCheck?
No. EPUBCheck is the official validator and checks hundreds of rules. This tool checks the structure, metadata, links, markup and cover problems that cause most rejections, in your browser. Apple Books requires an EPUBCheck pass, so run it too before submitting there.
What file size limits do stores have?
Amazon KDP accepts EPUBs up to 650 MB, Kobo Writing Life up to 100 MB, and Apple Books up to 2 GB. On KDP’s 70% royalty option, Amazon also charges a delivery fee per megabyte, so smaller is better.
Does KDP still accept MOBI files?
No. KDP stopped accepting MOBI for reflowable ebooks in 2021. Upload an EPUB, a Word document or a KPF file from Kindle Create instead.
