How to use the cover size checker

Drop your cover image into the box. The checker reads its size, shape and file type right in your browser (nothing is uploaded) and tells you whether Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo and Google Play Books will accept it, with tips where a store prefers something different. Making a paperback? Switch to Paperback cover size to work out the full wrap: back, spine and front with bleed.

What makes a cover work

  • Design for a thumbnail. Most shoppers first see your cover at the size of a stamp. Big, short titles and one clear image beat detail.
  • Use a tall rectangle. Amazon's ideal is 1,600 × 2,560 px (1:1.6). A 2:3 cover, like 1,600 × 2,400 px, is accepted almost everywhere too.
  • Don't upscale a small image. Apple asks for at least 1,400 px on the short side and says not to enlarge smaller art to get there.
  • Save as RGB JPEG for ebooks, with light compression. Paperback covers are a single print-ready PDF at 300 DPI.

Koobe designs four covers per run with your title, subtitle and name lettered in, and exports the front cover as a 1,600 × 2,400 px JPEG. See the publishing guide for where it goes.

What size should an ebook cover be?

Use 1,600 × 2,560 px for Amazon KDP, its ideal. That size also meets Apple Books (at least 1,400 px on the short side), Kobo and Google Play Books (at least 640 px).

What file type should I use?

JPEG works everywhere for ebooks. KDP also takes TIFF, and Apple, Kobo and Google accept PNG. Paperback covers on KDP are uploaded as one PDF.

Does my image leave my computer?

No. The checker reads the image inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

How wide is a paperback spine?

On KDP, multiply your page count by 0.002252 in for white paper or 0.0025 in for cream. A 180-page book on white paper has a 0.405 in spine.
