How to convert Markdown to EPUB

Drop a .md (or .txt) file on the box, check the title and chapters, add a cover, and download the EPUB. It runs in your browser.

How Markdown maps to an ebook

  • Headings make the chapters. If your book uses # for the title and ## for chapters, a heading used only once at the top becomes the title and the ## headings become chapters. If # is used for every chapter, each one becomes a chapter.
  • **bold**, *italics*, lists, links and block quotes carry over.
  • Inline code and code fences become plain text; horizontal rules are dropped.
  • Images aren’t included: an image link points to a file outside the Markdown, which the browser can’t read. If your images matter, put the text in a Word document and use the DOCX converter.

Writing in one Markdown file per chapter? Join them first (cat chapter-*.md > book.md on a Mac) so the converter sees the whole book.

Check the result with the EPUB checker. If you’d rather not write the whole thing yourself, Koobe can draft it from an idea.

Markdown to EPUB examples

A book written in Obsidian or iA Writer

Export or copy the manuscript as one .md file; ## headings become chapters with a table of contents.

A GitHub README turned guide

Headings, lists and links carry over; code blocks become plain text paragraphs.

A plain .txt draft

Lines like “Chapter 1: Getting Started” split the chapters, and blank lines separate paragraphs.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your computer. Nothing is uploaded to Koobe or anywhere else, so it works for unpublished manuscripts too.

Which Markdown does it support?

Headings, paragraphs, bold, italics, bulleted and numbered lists, links and block quotes. Tables, footnotes and images aren’t carried over.

How do I make chapters?

Give each chapter a heading at the same level, usually ## (or # if the book has no separate title heading). The converter uses the top level that appears more than once.

Can I use it for a plain text file?

Yes. Blank lines separate paragraphs, and lines like “Chapter 3” or “Part Two” start chapters.

“Still went out the same week. That’s the part I couldn’t do on my own.”
