How to use the KDP royalty calculator

Pick Kindle ebook or Paperback and your Amazon marketplace, then enter your price. For ebooks, add the file size (it sets the delivery cost on the 70% option) and, if you have one, your paperback price. For paperbacks, add the page count, ink and trim size, and the calculator works out the printing cost, your royalty and the lowest price KDP will accept.

How KDP royalties work

Kindle ebooks pay either 35% or 70% of the list price, before VAT:

  • 70% is only available inside a price band: $2.99 to $12.99 on Amazon.com since July 7, 2026 (it used to stop at $9.99). Amazon subtracts a delivery cost of $0.15 per MB first, so heavy files earn less. Your ebook must also be at least 20% cheaper than any paperback edition.
  • 35% works at almost any price from $0.99, with no delivery cost. It can win below $2.99 or above $12.99.

Paperbacks pay a share of the list price minus the printing cost. On Amazon marketplaces the share is 60% at $9.99 and up, and 50% below that. Printing cost is a fixed charge plus a per-page charge that depends on ink and trim size. Expanded Distribution to bookstores pays 40%.

KDP royalty examples

$4.99 Kindle ebook, 2 MB

70% option: 0.70 × ($4.99 − $0.30 delivery) = $3.28 per sale. The 35% option would pay $1.75.

$14.99 Kindle ebook

Above the $12.99 band, so only 35% applies: $5.25 per sale. Pricing at $12.99 instead would pay about $8.88 at 70%.

$14.99 paperback, 180 pages, black ink, 6 × 9 in

Printing costs $1.00 + 180 × $0.012 = $3.16. Royalty: 60% × $14.99 − $3.16 = $5.83 per sale.

What is the KDP 70% royalty price range?

On Amazon.com it’s $2.99 to $12.99, since KDP raised the top of the band from $9.99 on July 7, 2026. Other marketplaces have their own bands, such as £1.77 to £12.99 on Amazon.co.uk.

What is the KDP delivery cost?

On the 70% option, Amazon.com charges $0.15 per megabyte of your converted file for each sale. A text-only ebook usually costs a few cents. There’s no delivery cost on the 35% option.

Is it better to pick 35% or 70%?

Inside the price band, 70% almost always pays more. Outside it, 35% is your only choice. The calculator shows both side by side for your price and file size.

Do I need KDP Select for 70%?

Not in most marketplaces. KDP Select is required to earn 70% on sales to customers in Brazil, Japan, Mexico and India. It also makes your ebook exclusive to Amazon while enrolled.
