Word Count to Pages Calculator
Turn a word count into book or manuscript pages, or a page count into words.
Estimates. Book pages assume 11 pt serif body text (12 pt for us letter), about 1.2 to 1.35 line spacing, typical book margins, no images. Manuscript pages assume 12 pt type and 1 in margins: about 250 words double-spaced and 500 single-spaced. Reading speed: Brysbaert (2019).
How to use the word count to pages calculator
Enter your word count and choose what kind of page you mean: a printed book at a trim size like 6 × 9 in, or a manuscript in 12 pt type, double- or single-spaced. Switch to Pages to words to go the other way, for example when a publisher asks for 200 pages.
How many words fit on a page
There’s no fixed number: font, size, spacing, margins and headings all change it. These are the usual estimates:
- Printed nonfiction, 6 × 9 in: about 300 words a page (250 to 350)
- Printed, 5.5 × 8.5 in: about 265 words; 5 × 8 in: about 230
- US Letter workbook: about 500 words a page
- Manuscript, double-spaced, 12 pt: about 250 words a page (250 to 300 in Times New Roman)
- Manuscript, single-spaced: about 500 words a page
The double-spaced rule comes from typewriters: 10 words a line, 25 lines a page. It’s still how agents and editors talk about length, even though modern fonts fit a few more words.
Ebooks reflow on every screen, so they don’t really have pages. For an ebook, word count and reading time are what readers feel; this calculator shows both. For a fuller guide, read how long an ebook should be.
