How Long Should an Ebook Be?
Typical ebook lengths by type, from 2,000-word lead magnets to 60,000-word books, with page counts, reading times and what readers expect.
Most ebooks fall between 2,000 and 60,000 words. A free lead magnet can do its job in 2,000 to 7,500 words, a short how-to guide usually runs 7,500 to 20,000, and a full nonfiction book sits around 40,000 to 70,000. The right length is the shortest one that fully delivers what your title promises.
That last sentence matters more than any number below. Readers don't reward length. They reward getting what they came for without padding.
Typical ebook lengths by type
The page counts here assume a 6 × 9 inch page with roughly 250 to 300 words per page, which is common for a nonfiction paperback or print-style PDF. Reading time assumes about 200 to 250 words per minute. Ebooks on phones and e-readers reflow, so "pages" there are only an estimate. Our guide to what an ebook is explains reflowable and fixed layouts.
| Ebook type | Words | Approx. pages (6 × 9) | Reading time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lead magnet or checklist guide | 2,000 to 7,500 | 7 to 30 | 10 to 35 min |
| Short guide or "short read" | 7,500 to 20,000 | 25 to 80 | 30 to 100 min |
| Workbook | 10,000 to 25,000 plus exercises | 40 to 120 | Done over days, not one sitting |
| Practical how-to ebook | 20,000 to 40,000 | 65 to 160 | 1.5 to 3.5 hours |
| Full nonfiction book | 40,000 to 70,000 | 135 to 280 | 2.5 to 6 hours |
| Novel (for comparison) | 70,000 to 100,000 | 235 to 400 | 4.5 to 8.5 hours |
A few notes on the rows:
- Lead magnets are free downloads you trade for an email address. They solve one narrow problem. Long ones tend to go unread, which defeats the point. There's a full guide in how to create a lead magnet ebook.
- Short guides answer one question well: how to start a vegetable garden on a balcony, how to prepare for a first marathon, how to run a better weekly team meeting. Many paid Kindle ebooks live here.
- Workbooks have fewer words than their page count suggests, because exercises, prompts and blank space take room. Count the writing, then add pages for the work.
- Practical how-to ebooks cover a whole skill or process, step by step, with examples. This is a good target if you want something that feels like a "real book" without a year of writing.
- Full nonfiction books are the length of most traditionally published business, self-help and history titles.
What changes how long your ebook should be
The promise in your title
Write down what the reader will be able to do, know or decide after reading. "Plan a week of family dinners in 30 minutes" needs far fewer words than "The complete guide to family nutrition." If your draft runs long, check whether the promise has quietly grown.
Who the reader is
Beginners need more explanation, more examples and more definitions. Practitioners want the method and the edge cases, minus the basics. The same topic can be 12,000 words for experts and 25,000 for newcomers.
Price and where you sell it
A free PDF and a $19 ebook carry different expectations. Buyers compare price to substance, so a paid book should feel complete. That doesn't mean long. A tight 15,000-word guide that solves a real problem can feel like better value than a padded 50,000-word one.
Format
Print-style PDFs show fixed pages, so readers see exactly how many there are. Reflowable ebooks (EPUB, Kindle) adjust to the screen, and stores estimate a page count for the listing. If you want the difference explained, read PDF vs EPUB.
Exercises, templates and examples
Worked examples are often the most useful part of a nonfiction ebook. They also add length fast. Keep the ones that teach something new and cut the ones that repeat a point.
How to work out reading time
Divide the word count by 225 (a middle value between 200 and 250 words per minute). That gives you minutes.
- 5,000 words ÷ 225 ≈ 22 minutes
- 15,000 words ÷ 225 ≈ 67 minutes, a bit over an hour
- 45,000 words ÷ 225 ≈ 200 minutes, about 3 hours 20 minutes
Reading time is a useful way to think about length from the reader's side. Ask: is my reader likely to give this a commute, an evening, or a weekend? A lead magnet should fit in a coffee break. A how-to ebook can ask for an evening or two.
You can skip the arithmetic with the calculator below. It converts words to pages for different trim sizes and gives you a reading time.
What Amazon and readers expect
Kindle shows a length on every listing
Kindle product pages show a page count, so shoppers see roughly how long your book is before they buy. Amazon also has a Kindle Short Reads section that groups shorter ebooks by estimated reading time, from 15 minutes up to two hours or more. A short book isn't a problem on Amazon. A short book that looks padded or overpriced is.
Paperbacks have a minimum
If you plan a print edition, KDP's paperback submission guidelines set a minimum of 24 pages, and the maximum depends on trim size, ink and paper. At 6 × 9, 24 pages is only about 6,000 to 7,000 words, so most guides clear it easily.
Reviews punish filler, not brevity
Readers forgive a short book that delivers. They rarely forgive repetition, vague advice or chapters that exist to hit a word count. Signs your ebook is too long:
- Two chapters make the same point with different examples.
- The intro takes more than a few pages to reach anything useful.
- You summarize what you just said at the end of every section.
- You can delete a chapter and the book still keeps its promise.
Signs it's too short:
- A reader would finish and still not know how to do the thing.
- You tell readers what to do but never how.
- There are no examples, or only one.
- Common mistakes and questions are left out.
Picking your target length
Here's a quick way to land on a number.
- Write the promise in one sentence. "After reading this, you'll be able to..."
- List the steps or questions a reader must get through to reach that promise. These become chapters.
- Give each chapter a rough budget. For most how-to ebooks, 1,500 to 4,000 words per chapter works. Shorter for simple steps, longer for the core method.
- Add it up, then add about 10% for an introduction and a closing chapter.
- Check it against the table. If you're far outside the range for your type, ask whether the promise is too big or too small.
For example, an eight-chapter beginner's guide at about 1,800 words per chapter comes to around 14,400 words, plus a short intro and close. That's roughly 15,000 words, 50 to 60 pages at 6 × 9, and a little over an hour to read. A comfortable short guide.

Where Koobe fits
When you start a book in Koobe, you pick a length up front. Short is about 8,000 words over 6 chapters, Standard is about 15,000 words over 8 chapters, and Long is about 30,000 words over 12 chapters. You see and edit the outline before any writing begins, so you can add, remove or merge chapters until the shape fits your promise. Afterward you can ask the built-in assistant to make a chapter shorter or add one that's missing.
Whatever tool you use, read the whole draft yourself before you publish. Check facts, cut repetition, and make sure every chapter earns its place. That review is what makes the length feel right.
Describe your book in a sentence. Koobe plans the chapters, writes them, designs the cover and exports a PDF and EPUB. Your first book is free.

“Files were ready for KDP, which is what I actually needed. First book I’ve finished.”
The short answer, again
Match the length to the job:
- Lead magnet: 2,000 to 7,500 words. One problem, one quick win.
- Short guide: 7,500 to 20,000 words. One question, answered completely.
- How-to ebook: 20,000 to 40,000 words. A whole skill, step by step.
- Full nonfiction book: 40,000 to 70,000 words. A broad topic, in depth.
Then cut anything that doesn't serve the promise. A book that ends when it's done always reads better than one that ends when it hits a number.
