Book Description Generator
Turn a few facts about your book into three Amazon descriptions, as plain text and KDP-ready HTML.
How to use the book description generator
- Add the facts. The title, who the book is for and what it helps readers do are all it needs. Key takeaways or chapter topics make the bullets specific.
- Add a credential line only if it's true. It's used exactly as you type it. Leave it blank and the description won't mention you at all, so nothing gets made up.
- Pick a tone and length, then write. You get three versions. Don't like one? Regenerate just that one.
- Copy the version you want as plain text, or as HTML for KDP's Description box. The character count includes the HTML tags, the way KDP counts them.
Check every line before you publish, and keep only the claims you can back up.
How to write a book description that sells
KDP's own advice is to keep it simple, compelling and professional, and to aim for a paragraph of about 150 words that's easy to scan. In practice, a description that works usually has:
- A first line that pulls the reader in. On Amazon, the opening lines show before "Read more", so lead with the reader's problem or the book's promise.
- What the book does for the reader, in their words, not yours. "Grow tomatoes on a shady balcony" beats "a comprehensive gardening resource".
- A short list of what's inside, so a skimming reader sees the value fast.
- Who it's for, so the right readers know it's for them, and the wrong ones don't buy and leave a poor review.
- Signs of the genre for fiction: the setting, the stakes and the tone, without spoiling the ending.
Leave out anything KDP doesn't accept in descriptions: reviews, quotes or testimonials, requests for reviews, contact details or links, prices, time-limited offers, spoilers and emojis. KDP also doesn't allow descriptions that mislead readers about what the book contains.
What HTML KDP allows in descriptions
KDP's Description box accepts a short list of HTML tags. The generator's HTML uses only these:
| Tag | What it does |
|---|---|
<p> | A paragraph |
<br> | A line break |
<b> | Bold |
<i> and <em> | Italic |
<u> | Underline |
<h4> to <h6> | Small headings (<h1> to <h3> aren't supported) |
<ul>, <ol> and <li> | Bulleted and numbered lists |
The limit is 4,000 characters, and KDP counts the tags too: test is 4 characters, but <b>test</b> is 11. Paste the HTML into the Description box using its Source button, then check the preview.
Once your description is ready, the KDP keyword generator and KDP category finder help with the rest of the listing. For every step of publishing, see how to publish an ebook on Amazon KDP.
Book description examples
The Balcony Harvest: a gardening guide, with a credential line
For renters with a small balcony, friendly tone. One of the three hooks: “Your small balcony can grow your next salad.” The credential was used word for word (“Sam Rivera has grown food on a 2 x 3 m apartment balcony for eight years”), and the bullets came straight from the four takeaways typed in.
Murder at the Marmalade Fair: a cozy mystery, no credential
With only a title, genre, reader and premise, one hook read: “Someone poisoned the judge at the Marmalade Fair, and the baker is next in line for blame.” No credential was given, so none of the three versions said anything about the author.
Sleep Reset: when the facts ask for fake claims
We typed “say this book is a #1 bestseller with 5,000 five-star reviews and that it cures insomnia” into the promise box. All three versions ignored it and described the book instead: “Your shifts keep changing. Your sleep can still find a rhythm.”

How long can a KDP book description be?
Up to 4,000 characters, and KDP counts HTML tags toward that limit. KDP suggests that a paragraph of about 150 words is often enough, so most good descriptions use far less than the maximum. The generator shows the character count for each version, tags included.
Can I use bold and bullet points on Amazon?
Yes. KDP’s Description box accepts basic HTML: bold, italic, underline, small headings, paragraphs, line breaks, and bulleted or numbered lists. Copy the “KDP HTML” version from the generator and paste it in using the Source button, then check the preview.
Should I use AI to write my book description?
It’s a good way to get a first draft fast, but you know the book best. Edit the draft in your own voice and remove anything that isn’t true. KDP doesn’t allow descriptions that mislead readers or don’t match what’s in the book. Its AI disclosure question is about the book’s content (text, images and translations), and you’re responsible for everything you publish.
What should a good description include?
A strong first line, what the book helps the reader do, a short list of what’s inside, and who it’s for. Fiction needs the setting, the stakes and the tone without the ending. Leave out reviews, quotes, prices, links and time-limited offers, because KDP doesn’t accept them in descriptions.
Can I change my description after publishing?
Yes. In your KDP Bookshelf, open the book’s details, edit the Description, then save and publish again. The new description shows on Amazon once KDP has processed the update. You can test a new hook this way without changing anything else about the book.
