ISBN Converter
Convert ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 and back, and check that an ISBN is valid.
Added 978 in front, dropped the old check digit and worked out a new one.
Checks the format and check digit only, not whether an ISBN has been assigned to a book. Numbers are shown without hyphens, because hyphen positions depend on registration data we don’t use.
How to use the ISBN converter
- Paste an ISBN, with or without hyphens or spaces. The tool tells you whether it's an ISBN-10 or an ISBN-13 and whether its check digit is right.
- Read the other version. An ISBN-10 becomes an ISBN-13; an ISBN-13 starting with 978 becomes an ISBN-10.
- Checking a list? Switch to batch mode and paste up to 100 ISBNs, one per line. Copy the results or download them as a CSV file.
The tool checks the format only. It can't tell you whether an ISBN has been assigned to a book, and it never makes one up. Numbers are shown without hyphens, because where the hyphens go depends on registration data the tool doesn't use.
ISBN-10 vs ISBN-13
ISBNs had 10 digits until 2007, when they moved to 13 so the system wouldn't run out of numbers. Every ISBN issued now has 13 digits, but older books still carry ISBN-10s.
- ISBN-10: nine digits plus a check character, which can be X (meaning 10).
- ISBN-13: starts with 978 or 979, then nine digits, then a check digit. It's the number in the barcode on the back of a book.
- Converting: an ISBN-10 becomes an ISBN-13 by adding 978 in front and working out a new check digit. Only 978 ISBN-13s have an ISBN-10 version; 979 numbers were never issued as ISBN-10s.

How the check digit works
The last digit of every ISBN is a check digit, worked out from the others, so a typing mistake usually shows up as an invalid number.
- ISBN-13: multiply the first 12 digits by 1, 3, 1, 3 and so on, add them up, and the check digit is whatever brings the total to the next multiple of 10.
- ISBN-10: multiply the first nine digits by 10, 9, 8 and so on down to 2, add them up, and the check digit is whatever makes the total divisible by 11. If that's 10, it's written as X.
If the check digit is wrong, the tool shows the digit that would make it valid. That's only a hint for spotting typos: use it only if it matches the ISBN you were given. For when you need an ISBN at all, see do you need an ISBN for an ebook?
ISBN converter examples
An ISBN-10 to ISBN-13
0-306-40615-2 is a valid ISBN-10. As an ISBN-13 it's 9780306406157: 978 added in front, and a new check digit worked out.
An ISBN-13 that starts with 979
9791090636071 is a valid ISBN-13, but it starts with 979, so it has no ISBN-10 version. That's normal for newer ISBNs.
An ISBN-10 that ends in X
080442957X is valid: X stands for 10 in an ISBN-10 check digit. As an ISBN-13 it's 9780804429573, which never contains an X.

What is the difference between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13?
ISBN-10 is the older, 10-character format, used until 2007. ISBN-13 is the current format: it starts with 978 or 979 and matches the barcode on the back of a book. A 978 ISBN-13 and its ISBN-10 identify the same book.
Can every ISBN-13 be converted to ISBN-10?
No. Only ISBN-13s that start with 978 have an ISBN-10 version. Those starting with 979 were never issued as ISBN-10s, so there’s nothing to convert them to.
What is an ISBN check digit?
The last digit, worked out from the others with a fixed formula. It catches most typing mistakes: if one digit is wrong, the check digit no longer matches, and the ISBN shows as invalid.
Do I need an ISBN for an ebook?
Usually not. Kindle ebooks on KDP don’t need one, because Amazon gives each ebook its own number, an ASIN. Some other stores ask for one, or give you one free. Our guide on whether you need an ISBN for an ebook covers each store.
Does KDP give me a free ISBN?
For paperbacks and hardcovers, yes. With KDP’s free ISBN the publisher shows as “Independently published”, and the ISBN can only be used for that edition on KDP. Use your own ISBN if you want your own imprint, or plan to print the same edition elsewhere. Kindle ebooks don’t need an ISBN on KDP.
