ISBN Barcode Generator

Turn an ISBN you own into a print-ready EAN-13 book barcode, as PNG or SVG.

A barcode is not an ISBN. Use an ISBN you already own; this tool doesn’t create or register ISBNs.

ISBN-13 or ISBN-10. Hyphens and spaces are fine.
ISBN-13
9780306406157
37.3 x 29.7 mm at 100% (1.47 x 1.17 in)

The PNG uses whole pixels for each bar, so it prints at 102.6% for sharp edges. The SVG is exact.

How to place it: keep the white space either side of the bars, put it on a white box on the back cover, and keep it at full black. On a KDP paperback, place it at the bottom right of the back cover, at least 0.25 in from the spine and the edges.

How to use the ISBN barcode generator

  1. Enter your ISBN. You need to own it already: the tool turns it into a barcode, but doesn't create or register ISBNs. An ISBN-10 is converted to its ISBN-13 first.
  2. Choose a price add-on, the small barcode beside the main one. Leave it off, use 90000 for "no price", or encode a US price.
  3. Set the size and background. 100% is the standard size; stay between 80% and 200%.
  4. Download an SVG for design software, or a 300 dpi PNG.

What an ISBN barcode is

The barcode on the back of a book is an EAN-13 code: the same 13 digits as the ISBN-13, drawn as bars a scanner can read. It isn't an ISBN itself, and making a barcode doesn't register anything. The ISBN comes from your country's ISBN agency (Bowker in the US).

A book barcode usually has three parts:

  • "ISBN" and the number printed above the bars.
  • The main barcode, with the digits printed underneath.
  • An optional 5-digit price add-on on the right. In the US, it starts with 5 for prices under $100 (51995 means $19.95), and 90000 means no price is encoded.

How to place it on your back cover

  • Bottom right of the back cover is the usual spot. On a KDP paperback, keep it in the 2 x 1.2 in area at least 0.25 in from the spine and the trim. KDP adds its own barcode there if your cover doesn't have one.
  • Keep it 100% black on a solid white box, with the white space either side of the bars. Scanners need the contrast.
  • Don't squash or stretch it, and keep it between 80% and 200% of the standard size.
  • Use vector (SVG) where you can, or a PNG at 300 dpi or more, placed at 100% in your layout.

For the full cover layout, the KDP cover template generator marks the barcode area for your book. To convert between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 first, use the ISBN converter.

ISBN barcode examples

9780306406157, no add-on

The ISBN-13 drawn as a standard EAN-13 with the "ISBN" line above: about 37.3 x 29.7 mm at 100%.

With a US price of $19.95

The add-on reads 51995: 5 for US dollars, then 1995 for the price. With the add-on the barcode is about 55.1 x 29.7 mm at 100%.

Prices of $100 and over, or no price

For $100.00 to $499.99 the first digit is 1 to 4, so $115.00 is 11500. For no price, or a price the add-on can't hold, use 90000.

Is a barcode the same as an ISBN?

No. The ISBN is the number that identifies your book, issued by your country’s ISBN agency. The barcode is that number drawn as bars so shops can scan it. You need the ISBN first; this tool only draws the barcode for an ISBN you already have.

Does KDP add a barcode for me?

Yes. If your cover file doesn’t include a barcode, or you use Cover Creator, KDP places one on your back cover automatically. Leave the barcode area clear. Use your own barcode only if you want control over it, or if you print elsewhere.

Where do I put the barcode on my cover?

Usually at the bottom right of the back cover. For KDP, keep it at least 0.25 in from the spine and the trim, on a solid white background, and don’t let any text overlap it.

How big should a book barcode be?

The standard (100%) EAN-13 is about 37 mm wide, and GS1 allows 80% to 200% of that. KDP suggests a 2 x 1.2 in area and a minimum of 1.4 x 0.8 in. Smaller barcodes may not scan reliably.

What is the small price barcode next to it?

It’s the 5-digit price add-on. In the US, the first digit shows the currency and range (5 for US dollars under $100) and the rest is the price, so 51995 means $19.95. 90000 means no price is encoded. It’s optional; many self-published books leave it off or use 90000.
